Russian coach told me to ignore Nigeria – Brian Idowu

Image
Nigerian fans would have watched one of their own strutting his stuff in Russia’s colours at the 2018 World Cup if the European country had not dilly-dallied.

Perhaps Brian Idowu would have jumped at the opportunity to represent the country where he was born.

Five things we learned from Nigeria vs Zambia match

Image
Nigeria booked a place in the 2018 World Cup courtesy a 1-0 victory over contenders Zambia. The Zambians who showed grit and resolve needed a victory at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium but an Alex Iwobi strike ended the Zambian dream of a maiden World Cup berth. Nigeria, hence, celebrates qualification to the World Cup as the first African side. Here are five talking points from the game
IWOBI IS THE REAL DEAL
Alex Iwobi’s goal ensured the Super Eagles were the first African side to secure a spot in the 2018 World Cup. The Arsenal midfielder came on to score the goal in the 73rd minute firing past Kenedy Mweene from Shehu Abdullahi’s cut back. It was Iwobi’s second goal for the Super Eagles coming fittingly against the side he scored his first. The 21-year old came on in the 65th minute for Moses Simon and his impact was felt immediately. The midfielder raced onto a cleared corner that many would have deemed a lost cause. He got to it ahead of his opponent, started off an at…

The eagles are finally in Russia, but we need to tackle a few matters before the Mundial in Russia

Eagles Journey To Russia :
MATTERS ARISING
●Is A Team Born?
●Should The Building Process Continue?
●Should Home Based Players Prosecute The Last Game?
●Should Vincent Enyeama Return?
●Does Rohr Require Presidency Protection?
●How Do We Check The Plots Of NFF's Players' Agents Now?

Super Eagles have done the needful. They have done Nigeria proud. They have secured a World Cup ticket with a game in hand. They have given Nigeria and Nigerians a befitting Independence Day anniversary gift. They had given President Muhammadu Buhari a befitting welcome gift when he returned from medical vacation with a 4-0 bashing of Indomitable Lions of Cameroun. They have revived hopes of a better team if sincerely,  transparently and professionally handled.
It is however not uhuru yet. The building process continues even as we all concur that a new team is born. We have returned to our tradition of picking our first 11 easily before any game irrespective of how crucial it may be. From Ezenwa to Abdullahi…

EAGLES SET TO MAKE RUSSIA 2018

Image
The super eagles of Nigeria take on the chipolopolo of Zambia in what many might describe as a make or mar showdown for the two teams. The eagles lead the group with 10 points from four matches, with their only blip;against the Cameroonians. The almighty Algerian team that were tagged as favorites to qualify in a group of death are now regarded as the whipping boys of the group.

Reigning African champions, Cameroon, have fallen down the pecking order as a result of their 4-0 loss to the Eagles in the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

The group still remains open with the Zambians on 7 points, having beaten Algeria on two legs.

A win or draw for the Eagles gives them the sole ticket to Russia 2018, while the Zambians would be looking to perform the Herculean task pf defeating the Nigerians on their home front-Nest of Champions.

For the Nigerians, coach Rohr might have a bit of a selection headache with who mans the post. The two goalkeepers, Ezenwa and Akpeyi have both impressed in training.

'2018 WORLD CUP VENUES ON TRACK DESPITE DELAYS' SAYS PUTIN

Image
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that some construction work on the 2018 World Cup stadiums remained behind schedule, but he was satisfied with the overall condition of the venues. “These delays are not critical, there is nothing terrible there, but as I have always said ... it is the most difficult thing to resolve tasks at a final stage,” Putin said at a meeting with senior sports officials, regional governors and prominent athletes to discuss preparations for next year’s tournament. “If we relax, we will not fully accomplish the work.” Moscow has eased visa regulations for foreign soccer fans and pumped billions of dollars into stadiums, hotels and other infrastructure. Yet while officials were upbeat about the country’s progress in preparing for next year’s tournament, they stressed that much still needed to be done.

ARGENTINA AND THEIR TROUBLING WOES IN FRONT OF GOAL

Image
Argentina's World Cup hopes are on the line as they go into the final qualifiers - so why do so many of their world class players under-perform? It is a conundrum that has puzzled and frustrated a succession of coaches, and ultimately in all but a few cases cost them their jobs. For the last decade Argentina have boasted a collection of forwards who are not just the envy of any national team, but arguably every football club on the planet. Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Paulo Dybala, Angel Di Maria and now Mauro Icardi are just some of the players accustomed to making the net bulge week in, week out for their clubs. In Messi, moreover, Argentina field a man who is unquestionably the greatest of his generation, and who has inspired Barcelona to unprecedented success. But when it comes to the international arena that undeniable talent often seems to evaporate. The failure to resolve the conundrum of why the world's best strikers fall flat with Messi and the Albiceles…
