Russian coach told me to ignore Nigeria – Brian Idowu

Image
Nigerian fans would have watched one of their own strutting his stuff in Russia’s colours at the 2018 World Cup if the European country had not dilly-dallied.

Perhaps Brian Idowu would have jumped at the opportunity to represent the country where he was born.

'2018 WORLD CUP VENUES ON TRACK DESPITE DELAYS' SAYS PUTIN

Image
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that some construction work on the 2018 World Cup stadiums remained behind schedule, but he was satisfied with the overall condition of the venues. “These delays are not critical, there is nothing terrible there, but as I have always said ... it is the most difficult thing to resolve tasks at a final stage,” Putin said at a meeting with senior sports officials, regional governors and prominent athletes to discuss preparations for next year’s tournament. “If we relax, we will not fully accomplish the work.” Moscow has eased visa regulations for foreign soccer fans and pumped billions of dollars into stadiums, hotels and other infrastructure. Yet while officials were upbeat about the country’s progress in preparing for next year’s tournament, they stressed that much still needed to be done.

International Football Round-up: Sweden and Ukraine Secure Qualification for Euro 2016

Image
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the star of the show for Sweden once again as they drew with Denmark 2-2 to secure a 4-3 aggregate victory and qualify for Euro 2016. The PSG striker scored both goals and will captain his country next summer in France once again in what will surely be his international swansong.

Yussuf Poulsen and Jannik Vestergaard pulled goals back for the Danes late on but it was heartbreak for Premier League players like Kasper Schmeichel and Christian Eriksen as Erik Hamren's men kept their cool to see the tie through.
