Zidane unruffled as Madrid crumble in Catalonia

Image
Real Madrid can still retain their La Liga title insisted coach Zinedine Zidane despite slumping to a shock 2-1 defeat at Girona on Sunday on their much-anticipated return to Catalonia.
The European champions hadn’t set foot in the deeply divided region over Catalan independence since a violence-marred referendum on October 1 sparked a political crisis across Spain.
Just days after the central Spanish government imposed home rule on Catalonia to nullify the local separatist leaders’ attempts to declare independence, Madrid were expected to enter the eye of the storm in the pro-independence hotbed of Girona, just over 100 kilometres northeast of Barcelona.
However, there were only a smattering of chants in favour of independence amid a largely party atmosphere with Spanish flags also waved by the Madrid support.
The locals’ celebrations were sparked by events on the field as Girona beat Zidane’s all-conquering superstars in the first ever meeting between the sides.

RAFA BENITEZ, HALA MADRID and NOTHING ELSE.'

Image
'With all my respect and thanks... HALA MADRID and NOTHING ELSE.' Benitez is due to receive £7million in compensation from Madrid after getting the boot seven months into his contract. That works out as £32,500 for every day the Spaniard was in charge at the Bernabeu.
Rafa Benitez has broken his silence following his dismissal as Real Madrid head coach, claiming it was 'an honour and a privilege' to have been given the opportunity to take charge at the Bernabeu. Benitez was relieved of his duties after just seven months in the Madrid hotseat, with club president Florentino Perez replacing the Spaniard with Zinedine Zidane on Monday evening.
Benitez may well feel aggrieved at having not been given more time to fully implement his ideas just 25 games after taking over from Carlo Ancelotti last summer, but the 55-year-old has released a statement full of dignity following his sacking.
